Artist’s Statement

A deep love for nature was planted into my heart from earliest childhood on. Spending time outside, observing plants, landscapes, the sky, different moods created by changing illumination was always one of my favorite pursuits even as a child. To me, the peace and healing power attained from nature seems surpassed only by the Creator Himself. I am grateful to have been given the ability to capture these beautiful arrangements of creation in my paintings and to bring joy to other people with them.

We live - if one follows the biblical sequence of events - after the Fall. In any case, we live in a world of suffering in which evil is rampant, a world whose events do not confirm our Being, a world that has to be resisted. It is in this situation that the aestetic moment offers hope. That we find a crystal or a poppy beautiful means that we are less alone, that we are more deeply inserted into existence than the course of a single life would lead us to believe.

Art is an organized response to what nature allows us to glimpse occasionally. Art sets out to transform the potential recognition into an unceasing one. It proclaims man in the hope of receiving a surer reply. The transcendental face of art is always a form of prayer.John Berger, The White Bird, 1985

Right as Rain - New Watercolors

Image

Main Street Plaza, Pine Bush, New York - May 30, 2008

The title of the show, Right as Rain, refers on one hand to the superb divine order and provision which can be so clearly observed in nature, and on the other hand to the obvious dependence of the farm land on rain. While a city person often could be tempted to view rain solely as a nuisance, ruining outdoor events etc, a farmer in the countryside, knows how right rain is, how life-giving and crucial to surviving. I hope to have captured that same earthy love for the land in my paintings.

herausgenommen - landscapes and still lifes

Image

Ausstellungsraum "das geschäft", Vienna, Austria - June 28, 2007

The meaning of the german word "herausgenommen " is twofold - to take- or lift out or to take liberties. Both meanings of the word apply here. The landscapes and still lifes are painted as if lifted out of nature, just as you would bring home a beautiful flower to replant in your garden for permanent enjoyment. The artist experiences it somewhat as a dare, as taken liberties however to paint in a representational style in a time when this aproach to Art is at the odds.

Beauty from AshesA Winter in Shawangunk

Image

Shawangunk Stone Parsonage, Wallkill, New York - April 28, 2006

After a devastating fire had wrecked the home of Austrian-born artist Doschi Rosa-Rollwagen in October '05, she and her family spent the winter in an historic stone house (built 1751) beautifully situated along the Shawangunk mountain ridge. The beauty of the area inspired Mrs. Rosa to a series of riveting watercolors, which were exhibited in April of 2006 at the historic stone home, under the title Beauty from Ashes.
